live edge shelves

One of my sister’s neighbors needed some shelving for their family room and hallway, and they were thinking of just going with regular pieces of maple and just buying some brackets. I brought some samples of lumber over, one being a piece of “live edge” lumber, which is simply a “slice” of part of the tree, keeping the natural edge on it for character. I sourced the lumber from my supplier who has a large mill, using epoxy for large voids. To prevent any further splitting, cracks were stabilized using butterfly keys. I also used epoxy to frame the keys to fill any gaping. I used two coats of walnut stain and several coats of satin polyurethane for the finish. The two smaller shelves were hung on either side of a built in and the larger one was hung in the entryway of the home. The customer chose the hardware during the build, which looks amazing in their home.
