tables
she makes tables
Growing up, my dad was always bringing home leftover materials from work that were otherwise going to be discarded and managed to build up quite a collection of parts, lumber, and hardware over the years. For the good or bad, I've followed this path, but keep my inventory of random materials to a minimum. If the project allows, I love to repurpose materials, either from my stock, or items that the customer has, and would like to make into an heirloom as a family keepsake.
lego table
I built a Lego table for my nephew’s ninth birthday. After finding a table in a pasture, I had to rebuild a few parts of it due to age. I added a bottom and made two separate platforms for the top to store his thousands of Legos in. Growing up, my sister and I were huge Van Halen fans, so I modeled the paint scheme after Eddie Van Halen’s “Frankenstein” guitar. The bottom of the table is the cover of the Diver Down album. It took about 25 hours to paint, as there were multiple layers and I wanted to make the stripes look like they were weaving in and out of each other. I was also able to incorporate my nephew’s name (LEO) on one of the sides.
barn door table
My favorite aunt had a farm table when I was growing up, and I’d always wanted on. After taking down a barn door at my mom’s farm, I spent several weeks sanding and then putting seven coats of high gloss polyurethane on it. I then attached legs and made a bench from lumber I found at the farm. The table turned out quite well, and after selling the farm in 2017, this was a nice keepsake.
tall bar table
A coworker asked me to build a tall bar table for her husband, and having never heard of one of these, I had to do some research and come up some plans. The table is made out of cedar, secured with pocket holes for the top, legs and bracing. During the build, I found there were natural cracks and some minor splitting at the knots so I filled these with black epoxy, rather than using a putty filler, which can dry up and shrink over time. It was then finished with several coats of high gloss polyurethane.
